GLIMPSES OF THE HISTORY OF TRIPURA

Tripura merged with India on 15th October 1949 as a part 'C' state, after the Regent Maharani Kanchanprabha Devi signed TRIPURA MERGER AGREEMENT on 9th September, 1949. Tripura became a full-fledged state on 21st January, 1972 under the provisions of the NORTH EASTERN AR- EAS ACT of 1971.

RAJMALA
  1. RAJMALA is the state chronicle of the Royal Family of Tripura.
  2. The 1st part (lahar) written in 15th century during the reign of Dharma Manikya I (1431-62).
  3.  2nd part was composed in 16th century at the time of Amar Manikya (1581-86).
  4. 3rd part was written in 17th century during reign of Govinda Manikya (1660-76)
  5. 4th part was composed in the middle of 19th century during the rule of Krishna Manikya (1760-83).
  6. 5th part written during the time of Kashi Chandra Manikya (1826-29). 6th part written during the reign of Krishna Kishore Manikya (1830- 49).
  7. Kali Prasanna Sen Vidyabhusan edited SRI RAJAMALA in 4 volumes during the reign of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya (1923-47).
  8. The Sanskrit version of Rajmala is called SHRI SHRI RAJARATNAKARA.
  9. Kailash Chandra Singha wrote "RAJMALA BA TRIPURAR ITIBRITTA in 1896. The earliest King of Tripura, according to Rajmala, is considered to be Druhya, the 3rd son of Yayati of Lunar Dynasty

Pre-Independence Era
1. Jujharu Fa conquered Rangamati (Udaipur) and made it his Capital. Jujharu Fa according to Rajmala was the founder of Tripura Era or Tripurabda which dates from 590 A.D.
          The rulers gave up their title 'FA' and took the title 'MANIKYA'. The earliest King to use the title Manikya was Maha Manikya who is believed to be the 1st historical dated King, His original name is believed to be Chheng Thung Fa.

2. Dharma Manikya (Dangar Fa/Dharma Fa) invited 5 Vedic Brahmins from Mithila and granted them lands in Sylhet district (presently Bangladesh).
          Dharma (1431-62) engaged historian & royal priest Durlabhendra and two Brahmins Sukreshwar and Baneshwar to compile the Rajmala.
          Dharma Manikya excavated 'Dharmasagar' tank at Comilla. Ratna Manikya (1464-88) was the earliest coin-issuing ruler of Tripura.

3. Dhanya Manikya (1490-1520) had 2 generals Raikachag and Raikacham. In 1506 he issued a coin and took the title 'Vijaindra'.
          Hussain Shah, the Nawab of Bengal was the contemporary of Dhanya Manikya.
          Dhanya Manikya built temple of Tripura Sundari in 1501, Mahadeva temple, temple of 'Chaudda Devata' at Udaipur. He constructed 'Kamalasagar tank at Kasba, named after his queen.

4. Vijay Manikya (1532-63) was the contemporary of AKBAR. He is mentioned in 'AIN-I-AKBARI.
         Daitya Narayan was the General of Vijaya Manikya and his Queen was Lakshmi.

6. Amara Manikya (1577-85) constructed a big tank known as 'Amarsagar.

7. Kalyana Manikya (1626-60) constructed a tank known as 'Kalyansagar and built a Kali temple at Kasba, and also Gopinath temple at Udaipur

8. Govinda Manikya (1660-61, 61-73) was the 1st King who used Tripurabda' on his land grants in copper plates.) Gunavati Devi was the Queen of Govinda Manikya.
          Govinda Manikya had friendly relations with Prince SHUJA. He constructed an embankment on river Gumti.) AURANGZEB wrote a letter to Govinda Manikya demanding the sur- render of Prince SHUJA

9. Rabindranath Tagore wrote two famous plays 'BISHARJAN AND RAJARSHI' on the life and times of Govinda Manikya. He discontin ued the traditional animal sacrifice before Goddess Tripura Sundari.

10. The Nawab of Bengal Shujauddin granted Dharma Manikya II (1714- 29) the zamindari right of the district of Roshanabad.

11. Shamser Gazi (1748-60) became the ruler of Chakla Roshanabad. He defeated Krishnamoni, the brother of Indra Manikya & occupied Udaipur in 1748. He set up Lakshman Manikya as puppet King.
          GAZINAMA by Sheikh Manohar is the life story of Shamser Gazi.
          Shamser Gazi appointed administrators for each pargana-built several forts-employed both Hindus & Muslims & granted them tax-free lands fixed weight of seer at 82 sicca - list of prices of commodities were displayed in every market - excavated tanks.

12. Krishnamoni took the title of Krishna Manikya (1760-83) and ascended the throne. Old Agartala became his Capital. 
          Krishna Manikya completed the construction of the temple of Seven- teen Jewels. After his death his Queen Jahnvi Devi ruled for about 2 years.

13. Ramganga Manikya
(1813-26) established Gopinath in the JAGANNATH TEMPLE at Puri and made KUNJA at Vrindavan.

14. Krishna Kishore Manikya (1829-49) established his Capital at present Agartala known as NATUN HAVELI.)

15. During the reign of Ishan Chandra Manikya (1849-62) there were the Tipra Revolt (1850) Kuki Disturbances (1860-61). His spiritual guru was Goswami Bipin Behari.

16. Bir Chandra Manikya ascended the throne in 1862 after the date of his brother Ishan Chandra Manikya.
          Jamatia Revolt.(1863) and Kuki Revolt. (1871) took place during his reign.
          He was the first king of Manikya family to adopt title "DEVAVARMA".
          He abolished Sati System and Slavery System in Tripura.

17. Radha Kishore Manikya construct a new palace called Ujjayanta palace in 1901.
          He introduced a modern system of educations, reform health, agriculture and police department.

18. Birendra Kishore Manikya established tea industry in Tripura. He constructed the Kunjaban Palace (1917), Laxmi Narayan Temple and Durga Temple.
          He inaugurated State Civil Service Examination.
